Reflection Journal Multi-Media Entry 3: Power of Advertising
People are
affected by advertisements, however
there are some
that believe people
make their own
decisions and are
not affected by
advertisements. For example they
argue that people
can resist even
subliminal messages.
According to Kirkpatrick, who is a professor
on marketing in
California State University, there
is no subliminal
messages because subliminal
means below our
limit of perception . So how
can subliminal messages
affect people? However, he
has not considered
one thing. Actually people
can perceive them but not
recognize them completely. This cause
to not remember
what we saw
or smell or
heard clearly. But
this does not
mean we cannot
be affected. I
want to give
an example to
illustrate that clearly.
Kirkpatrick stated that
“...in a movie theater
in 1957, the
words ‘eat popcorn’
and ‘drink Coca-Cola’
were flashed on the
screen at a
speed no one
could perceive. During intermission
the sales of
popcorn supposedly increased
58 percent and
the sales of
Coca-Cola 18 percent.”. People in
movie theatre actually saw
the words but
they do not
know that. Can we
say they buy
coca cola and the
popcorn because of
their own free
will or the words
they see lead
to buy them? Another example is
a research which
is done by Duke University.
They took two
group of people
in research.. Participiants was
shown a video
which they need
to say which
corner of the
video the box
appear and go quickly.
However, what participiants
did not know
is that one
group also saw
apple logo which is
quckly poped up in the video
while the another
group sees IBM
logo in the
same way. The
researched reveal that participiants
who saw apple logo
were getting more
creative than the others. As
a result, we
can say that
people can easily
be affected by what
they are not
aware of. Actually, people
cannot resist what
they actually does
not recognize? So
these advertisements affect
people even people do not know.

Reflection Journal 3: Power Of Advertising
POWER OF ADVERTISING
Do you
know that in
1991 Sweeden prohibited
adevertisements during children’s
private time or “In
2001, U.S. advertising expenditures topped $230 billion”? Why are
governments banning advertisements or
why companies are
going through a lot of
money for advertising? These bring
us to one point. Advertising is
powerful in affecting
people and they
gain this power
by bombarding people
with advertising and by appealing
to people’s senses
and emotions to make people buy
things that people do not need or not want. Advertising affects
people’s buying choices
when they are
shopping. Advertisers appeal to
consumers’ senses and
emotions in order
to influence their
decisions. First of
all, advertisers can
use sences to
sell a product
to a customer
which does not
need that product. For
example, Lindstorm states
that supermarkets are
placing their bakeries
near of the exits so that people
can smell the
“fresh baked smell” and they
are willing to
buy the products. This
is not the only
usage of scent.
Advertisers have found
a new crucial
method which is
called “sensory branding”.
Before this method
advertiserts thought that the
most effective part
of an advertisement
is the visual
part. But the reality
is that when sight
is used together
with another sence,
the power of
effectiveness of advertisement
is remarkably increasing. So in sensory
branding, advertisers use at
least two sence, such
as smell and sight,
together and they
are making a
link betweeen these
sences and consumers’
emotions. Vanilla smell
is a good
example of this.
As Lindstorm stated,
there is vanilla
flavour in breast-milk.
This makes consumers
assossiate vanilla scent
with their childhood
memory, fedding from your
mother’s breast, and bring
them to happines.
That is why
“Johnson & Johnson’s Baby’s
smell” is always
memorable. Smell is more
effective than the
other sences. In a research
which is done in
Georgia State University , it is found
that “All of
our other senses, you
think before you
respond, but with
scent, your brain
responds before you
think.”. So when
you are affected
by a smell
you like, it
is too hard
to resist this
smell. Because you cnnot
think before you
take action. This makes
smell one of
the most powerful
weapons in advertisers’
hands. Advertisers use scent
and other senses to
change our buying decisions. In conclusion, advertising
can influence people’s
buying choices by
making people have
to see advertisement
everywhere and by using our
sences and emotions. People cannot get
rid of them
while they cannot find
a way to
escape them and influence of
them or while people
cannot be aware of
them. In this situation, it
is undeniable to
say that we
can buy the
same products without
advertisements through free will.

Article Reflection Multi-Media Entry 2: Safe Web Surfing
First of all, I want to specify that the subject of the internet surfing makes me very interested because I like talking about media, technology, globalization, ideologies and movement of thought since these concepts have been determining the order and balance in our world for many years. The subjects of internet using and technology are the ones that I would like to study and search in my future career, because education also has been affected seriously from them and it has been experiencing changes in its main frame, I think. The Internet can be a confusing and dangerous place. Without a safety net, many people can fall into the danger zones of pornography, predators, online scams, Internet viruses, and spyware. With such free access to the Internet around the world, many have abused it as an opportunity to take advantage of others but there's no reason to fear the Internet. When used properly, with the right precautions and the right information; the Internet educates, positively influences, and provides a creative outlet for today's kids. We, as the teachers of the future, must be concious about the advantages and disadvantages of the internet and should teach about the facts to not only our students but also their parents in terms of education. In my opinion, education has been coming into prominence about commercial issues in many countries. My expectation from the future is that I want to have much more information about the subject and its relationship with education and technology. The changes in the technologies became the most appropriate for everyone, I think. The new advancements in the technology, especially in the world of internet are interesting for me because you have comprehensive knowledge of the subject. All I want to mention about internet, its subjects, demands and purposes are these for now in general.

Article Reflection 2: I Surf, Therefore I Am
I Surf, Therefore I Am
In this article “I Surf, Therefore I Am”, there is a teacher called Judith Levine states her ideas about students’ using Internet on their homeworks. I also want to reflect this subject because the Internet using is so common nowadays and it is so familiar to me, too. The author of the article argues that there are significant limits to the power of the Internet. She tells that her students do not use the Internet in order to read or do research. They don’t do their homeworks orderly or read scholarly articles either. She says that her students use the Internet in order to do only surf. Also she thinks that they are like trash fish and it is hard fort hem to tell a dead one-legged crab from a healthy sea bass. Scant on the world knowledge and critical thinking skills, they are ill-equipped to interpret or judge the so-called facts that they insert into their papers confidently but in no discernible order. For example, one of her students does his homework without even knowing what he is talking about just as copying and pasting from the Internet. She also gives many other examples like this one. I think she is right about this fact and I agree with her on the point that Internet is harmful when it is used out of the aim which points the right aspects for doing homeworks. Because Internet has a wide world which holds so many kinds of information, I think it has very negative effects unless the students know how to use it effectively. These information that is ready in the Internet also consists useful ones. We can say that it has current information and somehow positive effects on doing homeworks. All in all, Internet is both harmful and beneficial according to the users’ use, especially the students. This article is written in such a good way and I find the author’s ideas so logical and perfect.

Reflection Journal Multi-Media Entry 2: Sailor Moon
“From a far
away place and time, earth’s greatest adventure is about the begin..” This is
the motto of the “Sailor Moon” and I think it appeals the audiences very much.
I want to mention about its characters in this part. Firstly, there are two
cats. The black one is Luna and the second one is Artemis. These cats have
special powers and they give power to the some warriors of planets. These
warriors consist of mostly girls and they are orderly;
Sailor Moon–Usagi,
Sailor Mercury–Amy, Sailor Mars–Raye,
Sailor Venus – Mina(the one with long yellow hair),
Sailor Jupiter – Lita, Sailor Saturn – Hotaru
Sailor Uranus – Haruka, Sailor Neptune – Michuru
Sailor Pluto – Setsuna and Tuxedo Mask – Darien. Tuxedo Mask is boyfriend of
Sailor Moon. At first, these warriors have a loss of some parts of their
memories and they have the ability of traveling into the time. They fight
against the Dark Kingdom and Queen Beryl. Queen Beryl fight against the
warriors of planets with different monsters or warriors everytime. But the
sailors use their all powers in order to come over these evils. These are what I
want to write about Sailor Moon in this part.
Fighting evil by moonlight
Winning love by daylight
Never running from a real fight
She is the one named Sailor Moon
She will...never turn her back on a friend
She is... always there to defend
She is...the one on whom we can depend
She is the one named Sailor.....
Sailor Venus
Sailor Mercury
Sailor Mars
Sailor Jupiter
With secret powers
All so new to her
She is the one named Sailor Moon
Fighting evil by moonlight
Winning love by daylight
With her Sailor Scouts to help fight
She is the one named Sailor Moon
She is the one named Sailor Moon
She is the one . . . Sailor Moon
Winning love by daylight

Reflection Journal 2: Sailor Moon
SAILOR
MOON
Have ever read a “Manga”? Do
you watch “Anime”? If you are not familiar with these words, let me tell you
what they are. I’m going to mention
about the anime “Sailor Moon” in this journal and I want to begin with these
questions in order to warm the readers to my article. The words of “anime” and
“manga” emerge from the language of Japanese, so we can say that they are
particular to Japan. A manga is kind of cartoon that is drown and written in
Japan. Mangas are also differed from cartoons with their sharp lines. Moreover,
they have been popular all around the world since they first came out in Japan.
They also have so many different scenarios and most of them adress their fans’
desires. I am one of the great fans of mangas and I find them so engaging.
There are plenty of mangas that really worth reading and if you haven’t ever
read yet a manga, I strongly suggest you to read one immediately. I know it has
been a long entry for manga but I really think that it is worth writing for
mangas because they are so special for me. By the way, as for the subject of
“anime”, they are the cartoon state of mangas. I think that they are also
special for me because I find them so attractive than normal cartoons. In
addition, their soundtracks are great. Japanese people know how to do this job.
I also want to say that the animes have so much quality. As for the “Sailor Moon”, it
is one of the most famous animes in the world. Years ago, I first began to
watch animes with this one. At first, it seemed to me that it is a cartoon
which is a type that only girls watch it because it consists of so many girls
who are warriors of planets but I realized that it is so nice and animes call
everyone. Sailor Moon comprises of 5 seasons, 200 episodes. Usagi Tsukino is the lead character and just a normal
8th grader: a bit lazy, a crybaby, and not the best student; but a great friend
with a big heart. Usagi's normal life changes forever when she meets a talking
cat named Luna who gives her a magical broach, which can transform her into the
soldier of love and justice, Sailor Moon. Usagi must find the other Sailor
Soldiers, Moon Princess, and a powerful stone known as the Imperium Silver
Crystal in order to defeat an evil enemy. This enemy is also searching for the
Crystal and if it falls into their hands, the world as they know it could end.
Also there's Tuxedo Mask, a masked man with hidden intentions but Usagi hopes
for him to be an ally. So the anime develops under their relationships and
events. These informations are what I want to give at first. Because it is a
fluent anime, I advise you to watch and learn their adventures which they came
up. Enjoy watching! :)
