Journal Set 3: Neoliberalism And The Effects Of It On Education

Neoliberalism which is a movement of thought advocates that private enterprise needs to manage market and economics should leave affairs of state. This concept leads the field that competition is the most important factor in determining the market. In addition to these, it features personal rights and private ownership. It is also a capitalist movement. From these explanations, we can make an inference that two important terms “competition and standardization” come out with the effect of  Neoliberalism.

When we come to education, the impact of Neoliberalism cannot be ignored. Here, firstly, we can express the general sayings about neoliberalism and education. With the ideologic attacks of capital or global powers, in the field of education; the concept “communal education” is totally being tried to destroy. Educational systems have been putting more emphasis on individual benefits day by day. As a result, people are getting more alien to their societal values, norms, even to their close environment. They are becoming more ambitious about earning money, having possession and so on. With the effects of these, privatization in education has become inevitable because these global powers are including education into market. They are supporting it and trying to feature private education. Nowadays, we are aware of the fact that private lectures, private schools and private teaching institutions have a significant role in education system in our country. They are well received by society since parents believe that these ways are helping their children to be more successful in their courses.

As we see, education has been affected by global issues such as neoliberalism and particularly, competition and standardization have had a significant impact on education. Education has begun to be used for commercial purposes. With the effect of this, Quality in education has underestimated. If you are rich, then you will take a good education but if you are poor, then you will stay in the background of the system. On the other hand, we know that education is for every individual one. Competition has occured among entrepreneurs rather than students. Nowadays, it is easy to see that economic productivity has been coming not from government investment in education, but from transforming education into a product that can be bought and sold like anything else.
