Journal Set 2: Freedom Writers
First of all, I want to appreciate the
movie “Freedom Writers” since the teacher who used several methods for students
in the movie became one of the most effective models that I want to be during
my education career in future.
As we can understand from above explanations, we saw
how an effective teacher with personal attributes and characteristics affects their
students’ life both educationally and socially. Hence, teachers should be aware
of the fact that their role in societies is very critical, so the more teachers
are self-sacrificing, the more powerful societies will arise. Finally, teachers
should know different attributes impact on students and should work to enhance
them.
Journal Set 2: Health and Welness Tips For College Students
Many college students seem that they
couldn’t spare enough time for keeping up on their personal health and wellness
until they get an illness while they are in rush of college life. I think there
are a few tips about dieting, exercising, sleeping etc. to help students
and stay healthy throughout their education. For instance, when I first came to
university, generally I was eating junk food, unhealty snacks and I was always skipping
breakfast because they all seemed time saving to me. But I understood that I
was wrong because I was getting to have eating disorder and I became ill
afterwards. What is more, I didn’t have a bedtime routine and I was doing
physical exercises disorderly. I think these points about these subjects can be
very useful to college students. In my opinion, we should organize our life
routines well as eating every meal in their time, consuming healthy food,
sleeping and exercising orderly. Consequently, in order not to be caught up an
illness we should take necessary precautions like washing our hands, drinking
lots of fluids and keeping immunizations up to date.
Journal Set 1: Favela Rising
Favela is locally known as ghettos of Rio de Janeiro in
Brazil. Gangs, violence, drug dealing and conflict with police officials are a
common part of daily life in this region. Anderson Sa is one of the member of
favela and he was a drug-trafficker here. He saw violence and related ugly
things in favela , and also he saw many people that died in situations
which police officials attacked them. After a while later, Anderson Sa realized
the fact that the life that he was living had a dead end. Even innocent people
were being killed at the time of police operations in favela because this area
was known as criminal territory in the city, and people are all guilty. Hence,
he decided to give up selling drugs and gang life to become the leader of this
community in his struggle that is against violence. So, he became the
representative and warrior of favela against violence and Anderson believed
that music could be more than entertainment, so it would be a force for their
right struggle.
In the movie Favela Rising, Anderson Sa had used his talent
to take youth from using drugs, so he and his close friends decided to use
music and dance in order to express their ideas in favor of nonviolent life, by
the way children in favela want to be outlaw and Anderson and his friends start
to inform them about outlaw’s future. After a while, police officials did not
see their efforts and decide to make an attack to favelas again. Anderson’s music
and dance group’s name was Affroreggae and This group lost its one of the first
members in this police operation. This made them very sad, but at the same time
made them more and more ambitious in their struggle. They were not
comprehending to the attacks of police officials since they were only trying to
create their own cultural universe with music and dance. Thus, they continued
to work and develop their skills. Meanwhile, their number of fans continued to
increase day by day, so expanded to many people. Their lyrics were including
words and sayings against violence and in favor of justice.
Journal Set 1: A Good Teacher
People are always in a marathon in this life. In order to achieve
reputation, gain a lot of money, get better life conditions, they always
struggle. Within this struggle, education in schools contains a huge time.
People must continue to schools and get necessary education if they want to
achieve something. At this point, one of the most important figures in
education is teachers. Teachers are indispensable part of education. For a good
education, teachers should have good characteristics, also. Everyone wants a
good education and good teachers as well. First of all, a good teacher should
have a strong conscience and love
of human. Unfortunately, at the present time, people get more and more selfish
and everybody begins to think their own benefits. Nobody cares anyone. I think
this is the evil thing that makes our world a bad place to live in terms of
many aspects. But if teachers inoculate love of human to hearts of students,
this world will become much better. I think this is important for all the human
beings. Moreover, a teacher must have a self confidence in order to be a good
one. She should teach students to express themselves. In my opinion, expressing
oneself is one of the big problems, nowadays. Because we are in space age,
technological improvements besieged all around of us. Not only children but
also adults become slaves of computers, cell phones, game pads etc. Owing to
all these gadgets people began to grow apart from each other and lose their
expressing ability. Being self confident ones, teachers should overcome this
problem. Meanwhile, teachers should also do student-centered teaching method
and bring up children with the skills of investigating, thinking, criticizing,
reading and searching open minded. All in all, in order to be a good teacher,
one must love her job without any hesitation.
IT TAKES A SECOND TO SAY THAT
I’M FROM METU,
BUT ITS EFFECT LASTS A LIFETIME.
When
I first came in METU this year, I saw "I BRAIN METU" everywhere. Then
I began to think myself, what is "brain" as a verb. Beforehand, for
example I knew I love you and it made sense to me but what was I brain
METU? It still looks absurd to me and I haven't understood it with the exact
meaning yet. Instead of it, thanks to my blog homework, I began to think a new
slogan for METU. It mustn't have been I brain METU. I thought again and again
and again and again. Eventually, I found this "It takes a second to say
that I'm from METU, but its effect lasts a lifetime.". Oh yes, alright!
This is it. I liked this slogan entirely and shared it with my friends.
Approximately fifteen friends around me found it succesful and they
congratulated me and I thanked them.Then I was happy about it and with its
happiness another great slogan came to my mind. It is "DON'T EDUCATE,
METUCATE!" This is a really original slogan and I think it deserves to be
a new one instead of " I Brain METU".

I have got two visa exams tomorrow and I have not even started to study yet.

TO STUDY
Study, study, study... All we have to do is studying as students. Actually, to study is the right thing. But as known by everybody, there is a general student nature all over the world. It is such a strange thing that it is valid for every student. What is it? How much can it be so bizarre? In fact, if you are reading this passage right now, it is impossible that you don't know.Of course you have already experienced it before. You go to school. You listen to lessons but generally not exactly :) Then you come to home or dormitory back. This circumstance continues till the last week of exams. In those days, students become gradually anxious and they study hard until mornings. Although they study hard the Last Week, they often get mediocre results. In here, There is no problem with studying hard. The main problem is to study at the Last Week of the exams :) They know it very well but they never try to correct this wrong circumstance. Like I said at first in this passage, a student nature is so bizarre.
There is also another strange but difficulty situation in a
student's life. The question is "How can I bring myself to study when I
want to but I just can't focus". This is a crucial problem as well as to
study. To focus on studying. A normal student thinks it like that “I
want to study and do well, really, I do. I have full intentions of spending the
whole day reading my materials but when I sit down I just can't bring myself to
do it. But my mind wanders and I just find myself wanting to do other things
even though I plan to study the entire day and I really, really want to do well
on my evaluations. How can I study better?" At this point, this
student should never gets panic. He should relax as soon as possible and take
it easy! Of course starting is the hardest but somehow it can be begun to this.
And students must never forget that to begin is the half of finishing.

TO VALUE
SOMEONE WHOM WE LOVE

What is the meaning of life? Have you ever
thought about it? Imagine, what if we know that we are going to die soon? If
you learned that you have last 3 months to live, what would you do while you
are living as waiting for your death? Our life is an important gift given by
God to us. In life, we are always in a marathon to achive something. Of course
not exactly everybody is in such a tempo. But every time the winners are the
side of humpings.
There are two lovers in this song, “What
Hurts The Most”. Initially, although they love each other very well, the boy
gets a traffic accident afterwards and he dies. The song’s video clip shows us
how his girlfriend grieves after him. I think this song emphasizes the
importance of love while our beloved people are near us.
In this song, the girl sees her boyfriend’s
traffic crash in her dream. But she doesn’t want to believe this dream. One
day, while they are sitting in her boyfriend’s car, she asks him “Do you ever
think about the future? What do you see?”. At first, the boy supposes that
there is a problem but his answer is perfect. He says “I see you”. I think this
is a very lovely answer and the girl is happy with this. But she doesn’t answer
the same question her boyfriend asks her. Because she doesn’t want to come true
her dream about future and she moves away from the car.
Afterwards, her bad dream becomes real and
her boyfriend is dead now. After his death, she undergoes days with full of
regrets and sorrows. At the end of the clip, the girl runs away from back of
the imagination of her boyfriend and comes to his grave. This part of the clip
is so pathetic. She bends down and says, " I saw you!". I think, this
speech of her makes the audiences who watch this clip, leaves in a sad and
quite touching situation. I think this is a perfectly prepared clip and
appropriate for the song. And according to me, we learn from the song that we
should love our family, our friends, and the people who esteems and values us
while they are alive and near with us.
HEROES
How do you feel if you have a superpower? And what would you do with this? Do you use it for your welfare or others'? For instance, to save the world. Heroes is one of the most famous serial which tells stories of ordinary people who discover their extraordinary abilities and how how these abilities take effect in the characters' lives.
Initially in Heroes, some ordinary
people gradually becomes aware that they
have special abilities. At the same time, several ordinary individuals are
investigating the origins and extent of these abilities. While coping
with these new abilities, each of the characters is drawn, willingly or
unwillingly, into the Company's conspiracy to control superpowered people and
into a race to stop an explosion from destroying New York City. Without
wishing, each character is caught in a plot that makes each individual trying
to save the world.
Characters in Heroes have quite strong powers. Because of this, it
presents a lot of exciting episodes and leaves the audiences in a thrilling
situation. For exemple, Claire Bennet has the ability of indestructibility.
Thanks to this, she never dies. I think this is really fascinating . Also
Micah, has an impressive ability. He is a genius boy who can interact with
electronic machinery through touch. And in Japan there is an ability which is
interesting one. Hiro Nakamura pierces the space-time and he manipulates time. He
empowers to change the future and embarks on wild adventures with his best
friend Ando Masahashi. Like these, there are lots of people who have different
but supernatural abilities in this series.
If I had a chance to be a hero, I would
be like Peter Petrelli. His superpower is absorving the powers of others. And it
would be really good. Of course most of the people want to have extraordinary
abilities. But I don’t think that it would be nice. Because humans are complicated
beings. They are always in a conroversy with others and if the people with
superpowers quarreled with the others, it would be a disaster. Because of this,
our world with its present condition is already well without any superheroes :)
Their ultimate destiny was nothing less than saving the world..
Ideal University In My Mind
Ideal
university in my mind must be the only one which has the most advanced
technology in the world. Thus, it must enforce the limits. Also it must have a
quite strong vision about future. This vision can include enhancing students’
qualifications and making the world much better environment for all
living things. Of course, everyone wants go to such a good university and
generally such good universities don’t accept every student but this university
must accept every student who wants to go here according to their abilities.
These are the particular features of my ideal university.
Ideal
university in my mind must present great opportunities to all of its students
such as travelling around the world to research for their studies, to enlarge
their vision of future, providing very good material and moral supportings for
all of its students’ wills. This university should also highlight the
importance for students to try out the various sports available in campus zone.
This is significant not only for closeness to the students but also for
improving the students’ minds because this was at the same time
emphasized by our great master Atatürk as a strong mind presents in a
strong body.
Ideal
university in my mind should meet the students’ leisure time activities. At
this point, I think the most efficient activity for the students is music. This
university must arrange the concerts, supply music rooms and instruments,
stimulate its students to participate in international music organizations and
spark the students’ music enthusiasim. Music is the nutrition of soul and
thanks to music , students can think more effectively and creatively. The other
activities may include playing drama, drawing picture,trekking, making
discussions like brain storming with others to improve the present situations.
Ideal
university in my mind must have a very large campus with ultra comfortable
dormitaries and also well designed department buildings with skilled teachers.
Actually, approximately all of these characteristics of this university look
familiar to me because I am going to METU that is a world-famous university
with world standards like all I have mentioned. And I am proud of being a
Middle East Technical University. Consequently all I can say is METU is my
ideal university.
BEING
A STUDENT AT METU
I
am happy about being at METU in many ways. To begin with; accomodation
conditions in dormitories are pretty good for me. I think these conditions meet
all needs of students.
Freedom
is one of the most common characteristics of METU. Everybody is free to do
whatever they want provided that they don’t interfere with other students’
rights. I liked this characteristic, too.
METU’s
campus zone is also very attractive. Forested area percentage is quite high on
campus and I think this is so important in terms of the students’ oxygen
requirement.
Teachers
and elder students are genuine and helpful to the new students. Nearly most of
the teachers are expert in their own branches and this makes METU a prestigious
university.
Although
METU has a very large campus, transportation is so easy with Ring Services. I
think this is also one of the outstanding easiness’ of METU.
Being
a student at METU is challenging for me in two ways. First one is bad weather
conditions. In winter, weathers can be so harsh and I cope with this challenge
wearing tightly. Second is known by every METU students. This one is the
difficulty of passing the lessons. I think this is a normal situation because
here is METU. Because of this, I study hard to overcome this situation.
Consequently,
being a student at METU has more advantages than it’s disadvantages so that I
am not regretful for coming here and I love my university!

“Paintings by artists including Picasso, Matisse, Monet, Gauguin and
Freud have been stolen from a museum in Rotterdam.”
Police in the Netherlands said the works were taken from the
Kunsthal Museum early on Tuesday morning.
The museum is showing works from the Triton Foundation as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations.
The paintings include Monet's Waterloo Bridge, Picasso's Tete d'Arlequin, Matisse's La
Liseuse en Blanc et Jaune and Freud's Woman with Eyes Closed.
Museum spokeswoman Patricia Wessels told the AFP news agency that police were alerted during the night when the
alarm went off but that the thief, or thieves, had left the premises by the time
police arrived.
Roland Ekkers from Rotterdam Police said: "The alarm system in the Kunsthal is supposed to
be state of the art. We've got no reason to believe that it's not
but somehow the people responsible for this found a way in and a way out."
It is the biggest art theft in the Netherlands since 20
paintings were stolen from Amsterdam's Van Gogh museum in 1991.
Worth millions
Chris Marinello, director of The Art Loss Register, which tracks stolen artworks,
said it was clear some of the most valuable pieces in the collection were
targeted.
Marinello said the items taken could be worth "hundreds of millions of
euros" - if sold legally at auction. However, he(personal pronoun) said that was now
impossible, as the paintings have already been registered internationally as stolen.
The other stolen paintings are Monet's Charing
Cross Bridge, Gaugin's Femme Devant une Fenetre Ouverte, dite La Fiancee and
Meyer de Hann's Autoportrait.
"An initial investigation suggests that the robbery
was well prepared," a police statement read.
Police are now reviewing videotape footage and calling on any witnesses to come forward.
In a statement, the museum's chairman Willem van Hassel said the museum would be closed on Tuesday.
The Triton Foundation is a collection of avant-garde art and the Kunsthal
exhibition was showing its works by more than 150 famed artists, including Paul
Cezanne, Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.
Although some of the foundation's works have been on public display in the past, the
current exhibition at the Kunsthal was the first time the entire collection had been shown together.
The Kunsthal museum, which means "art gallery" in Dutch, is a display space
that has no permanent collection of its own.
